Okinawa has 'Island chilli peppers', little red chillies that are SUPER hot! Much hotter than similar sized Thai chillies.
They are really pretty, starting off yellow, becoming orange, and finally a very dark-orange red.
You only need one in a dish, and then be sure not to cut it, or cut it first and take the seeds out. You will be extremely sorry if you eat the seeds.
The most amazing thing is that Bul-bul birds, 'hiyo-dori' come to my garden in winter to search for the chillies to eat! I wondered why all my ripe chillies kept disappearing ... The male bird would get them while the female kept watch. Yes, they actually ATE whole chillies that a human cannot put in their mouth. Maybe it kept them warm in winter ...
And thanks to those birds, I have small chilli plants all over my garden where they dropped seeds here and there. One good thing about sharing a harvest with nature.
This is a super simple dish of pasta made from lentils, with a sauce of fresh vegetables sautéed with just one chilli (which I then took out). Another dish cooked in under 5 minutes!
